Strolling in the History of the Convent

The secular building will make you feel in a different environment ...

Throughout its history, the Convent of Santo António (later denominated Convent of the Capuchos) was object of several adaptations and reconstructions that explain not only the peculiar architectural aspects, as the unusual paintings and inscriptions apparently anachronistic.
  1. Since 1746 there are documentary references to the Capuchos Convent dedicated to Santo António, patron saint of the religious Capuchos. The building, located in the Historic Center of Monção, features characteristics of the 16th century, particularly in its cloister, well before the Capuchos Church itself (1769). The cloister, of quadrangular plan, belonged to another Convent, the one of São Francisco, founded in 1563 by Franciscan Nuns, and abandoned in the middle of Century XVIII.

  2. In 1748, on the initiative of the Religious of Santo Antonio, the convent building integrated and expanded the house and chapel already existing in the walled Quinta and surrounded on the Fountain of the Village which had been built by nobles in the middle of the 17th century. Even today the Hotel Convento dos Capuchos is supplied by water from an old mine that passes under the Vila's wall (1656), which suggests the construction of these buildings at an earlier date.

  3. After nearly a century of monastic use, the Royal Decree of 1834 extinguished the religious order the Religious of Santo António of the Province of Monção.

In the same year the inventory and the public auction of the filling and the Convent took place. Thus began the secular period during which the Convent, now called the Quinta dos Capuchos, belonged to the family of the Baron de S. Roque, an illustrious nobleman of the region.

  4. In 1905, the Farm of the Convento dos Capuchos was acquired by José António de Azevedo Rodrigues, grandfather of the current owners. Since then the building has performed several functions, public and private, and has been used, especially as a school and court, and of course, family housing.

  5. Now, the former convent has again a public purpose: the conversion in Rural Hotel has involved deep recovery and appreciation.

The intervention and adaptation of the Convento dos Capuchos in Hotel was characterized by a peaceful coexistence between the old, pre-existing and the modern, built again, trying to respect and emphasize the historical and patrimonial document that the Convento dos Capuchos represents.
